What is the difference?

Both loose leaf and transfer leaf come in sheets, the difference is that a loose leaf sheet of gold sits loosely between the sheets of the book, whereas transfer leaf will stay on the paper until you go to apply it to another surface.

Transfer Leaf is the same as loose leaf except that each leaf has been pressed onto a lightly waxed sheet of tissue paper which can be picked up, thus avoiding contact with the metal. The tissue is then offered up to the sized area and rubbed from behind so that the leaf transfers from the paper to the object to be gilded.

The leaf is lifted from the pages by using a special brush called a Gilders Tip. The Gilders Tip is first brushed briefly across the side of the gilder’s face to build up a little grease or static so that the gold leaf attaches itself when it is gently touched with the brush hairs. The gold leaf can then be applied to the prepared surface directly from the Gilders Tip, or transferred to a Gilders Cushion where it can be cut to size with a Gilders Knife.

Transfer-gold-leaf application is relatively simple. Try to handle it only by the tissue edges so you don't get oil, moisture etc from your fingers onto the gold. Hold it firmly in place and press it down well, using a burnisher if necessary to get it into the corners of the work.

You should seal all metal leaf because it is thin, delicate and can be scratched, but some metal leaf will also tarnish if you don't seal it. You need to choose a product to seal the tarnish-able leaf that will not itself cause tarnishing
